Kelly Shanahan, MD, FACOG
A Partner in Your Healthcare
"My
training taught me the medical side of women's health care as well
as how to help people feel better and live healthier. But there
is another side to health care that can't be taught -- the side
that appeals to emotions and feelings associated with health problems.
In the years that I've been in practice, I like to think that listening
to you, explaining all your options, and understanding your concerns
is my real specialty."

"Lifelong professional memberships are 'must-haves' in today's
medical world. By meeting with other women's health-care specialists,
participating in clinical studies and maintaining hospital affiliations,
I can share my knowledge with my peers and learn from them, as well.
This enables me to provide my patients with more informed, advanced
care."

A Partner in Your Healthcare: Physician Assistants
A Physician Assistant is a health care professional licensed to
practice medicine under physician supervision, which can be either
in the office or by telephone or electronic communication. PAs perform
many duties in medicine including physical exams, diagnosing and
treating illness, ordering and interpreting tests, preventive health
care counseling, and surgical assisting. PAs can also write prescriptions
in most states. PAs are educated in the medical model designed to
complement physician training. Upon graduation, PAs must log 100
hours of continuing medical education every two years and sit for
a recertification exam every six years. The scope of practice of
the PA's practice corresponds to the physician's practice; in most
settings the PA will see many of the same types of patients as the
physician. Referral to the physician, or close consultation between
the patient-PA-physician, is done for unusual or hard to manage
cases.

"I had known for many years that I wanted to work in healthcare,
but it wasn't until I discovered the PA profession that I knew exactly
what I wanted to do! I think PAs represent both past and modern
medicine in that we are able to take the extra time some patients
require and provide the latest and best care available. I have always
been interested in women's health and with each day working with
Dr. Kelly Shanahan, my interest and knowledge in the field grows.
I look forward to helping preserve and improve women's health in
the local communities."
